About Me

Hello! I’m a cheery Yorkshire based writer and illustrator, specialising in children’s picture books.
My first picture book, I Have an Orange Juicy Drink, is published on 11th March 2016 by Fat Fox Books. It’s a wonderfully eccentric and delightful tale about one boy’s love for orange juice and his brother, plus his hatred of elephants, aliens, dinosaurs and people who can’t say “please”.
Being an author/illustrator is a very exciting existence, and you can find out about what goes on in my head, as well as the steps to becoming a published author in my blog.
I’ve been working freelance as an illustrator since the age of 18 when I got my first job drawing cartoon strips for Premier League Football Club, West Ham United. It’s the best job in the world, and I like to mix it up a bit, by occasionally appearing on gameshows! Like this.
Many moons ago I studied a BA in Animation & Design at the University of Sunderland, before completing an MA in Authorial Illustration at University College Falmouth. I love working with children of all ages, and since 2010 I have helped numerous schools across the country produce award-winning animations and films. In between my freelance work, I also teach Graphic Design and run apprenticeship projects at Hull College.
I am internationally represented by Hilary Delamere of The Agency and am very happy to take on commissioned work and school workshop events. Please contact me at andy@shortandsmiley.com for further details.
